We have extracted information on the habitats of bigeye (Thunnus obesus), skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) and yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean by matching the spatial‐temporal distribution of catch and effort of purse seine and longline fleets collected by the Inter‐American Tropical Tuna Commission with oceanographic conditions and subjecting the matched data to Quotient Analysis and General Additive Models (GAMs). These analyses yielded the following results. The habitats defined by the GAM analysis of young fish differ significantly between two periods, one before and one after the introduction of fish aggregation devices (FADs). This was not true for the older fish caught by longline. We speculate that these changes were caused by the extensive use of FADs. Younger bigeye and yellowfin caught by the purse seine fleet have a different preference of environmental variables compared to older fish caught by longline. This is to be expected since tuna of different age groups have different sizes, metabolic capabilities and swimming skills. Moreover, as revealed by GAMs, the habitats of young fish differ between species to a much larger degree than those of older fish. Our results indicate the fundamental differences between fishing methods, targeted species, and operating region of the two fisheries. Specifically, young bigeye occupy equatorial waters farther from the coast and where the hypoxic layer is deeper, young skipjack occupy more productive waters associated with equatorial and coastal upwelling, and young yellowfin occupy broad areas where waters are underlain by a shallow hypoxic layer. 相似文献

Recently, a new phytoplasma was discovered in Hillsborough County in the state of Florida, USA. This phytoplasma belongs to the 16SrIV taxonomic group and is classified as subgroup D. It is the causal agent of lethal bronzing disease (LBD) of palm. Since the discovery of LBD in 2006, the disease has spread throughout much of the state. In 2014 and 2015, stands of cabbage palm and queen palms that had been present at the University of Florida's Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center in Davie, FL began showing symptoms of LBD. After confirming the presence of the LBD phytoplasma in initially infected palms by nested PCR and RFLP analysis, all palms were systematically sampled over the period of 1 year to monitor and quantify disease spread. A total of 30 cabbage palms were tested monthly by qPCR, with five testing positive on the first sample date. By the end of the study period, 16 cabbage palms had died from the infection. A total of 16 queen palms were surveyed, with three palms initially testing positive. By the end of the study, four queen palms had tested positive and died from the infection. To the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to document and quantify spread of palm‐infecting phytoplasmas. This data provides important insights into the ecology of palm‐infecting phytoplasmas and highlights the impact that the movement of infective insects can pose to established stands of palms. 相似文献

In the Philippines, only a few farmers and plantation owners register their tree farms with the Department of Environment
and Natural Resources (DENR), the office in charge of tree registration. One of the major reasons is their lack of knowledge
of government policy on tree registration. To help improve the flow of information and understanding of tree registration
policies among smallholder tree farmers and other stakeholders, a Primer on Tree Registration, Harvesting, Transport and Marketing Policies on Private Land was developed. Produced through the participation of stakeholders, including tree farmers, the DENR, and local government
officers, police, and timber dealers, the Primer is highly visual and has been released in English as well as Waray–Waray
and Cebuano dialects. This paper reports findings of focus group discussions conducted to gauge user reactions to the Primer.
The Primer was considered as a valuable source of information about tree registration policies. Aside from being comprehensible,
FGD participants found it attractive, perceived it to be intended for them and free from content that confused them. However,
farmers suggested that illustrations need to be improved by making the persons portrayed more presentable and reflective of
their actual tree farm operations. Participants said that aside from the Primer, the flow of information on tree registration
policies could be improved through the use of multi-media including posters, radio broadcasts, and presentation in seminars

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plant Genetic Resources Conservation Unit in Griffin, GA maintains the United States germplasm collection for Ipomoea spp. (Convolvulaceae). During 2012–2014, 737 sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., plant introductions (PI) were acquired as tissue-culture plantlets and then acclimated to greenhouse conditions at the USDA, ARS, U. S. Vegetable Laboratory (USVL), Charleston, SC. Single plants were transferred to plastic-covered plant beds to produce cuttings for replicated field trials. Storage roots were harvested from 690 PIs grown in the field and 695 PIs grown in pots. Color coordinates were obtained for each PI using a tristimulus colorimeter. Hue angle values (h*) ranged from 8.2° to 88.3° (\( \bar{x} \) = 54.9°) for the periderm (peel or skin) of field-grown storage roots (n = 690 PIs) and ? 9.4° (= 350.6°) to 96.2° (\( \bar{x} \) = 51.3°) for pot-grown roots (n = 695 PIs). The red–green coordinate (a*) ranged from 0.8 to 30.7 (\( \bar{x} \) = 12.8) for the periderm of field-grown roots and ? 2.0 to 44.9 (\( \bar{x} \) = 16.1) for pot-grown roots. The yellow–blue coordinate (b*) ranged from 2.8 to 33.1 (\( \bar{x} \) = 19.4) for the periderm of field-grown roots and ? 7.4 to 38.1 (\( \bar{x} \) = 19.3) for pot-grown roots. Color saturation (chroma, C*) ranged from 13.7 to 35.8 (\( \bar{x} \) = 24.9) for the periderm of field-grown roots and 14.9–45.5 (\( \bar{x} \) = 29.3) for pot-grown roots. There is a paucity of quantitative data on the status of porcine cysticercosis in Venezuela, information which is essential
for understanding the level of disease transmission. This study was, therefore, conducted in a typical small rural community
in Yaracuy State, Venezuela, where previous cases of human Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis had been reported and where the free-ranging pig management practices and the lack of rudimentary
sanitary facilities indicated an obvious risk for transmission of the disease. Serum samples from 52 village pigs were screened
by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for anti-cysticercal antibodies (Ab-ELISA), using T. solium cyst fluid as the antigen and the HP10, monoclonal antibody-based, antigen trapping ELISA for parasite antigen (HP10 Ag-ELISA).
Significantly, a high proportion of the animals (65.4% for the Ab-ELISA and 42.3% for the HP10 Ag-ELISA) were sero-positive.
Five of the pigs, which were selected on that basis of positive tongue palpation, were killed for autopsy, and large numbers
of viable cysticerci were found in the carcases. This unequivocal documentation of porcine cysticercosis in Venezuelan pigs
presents clear evidence that T. solium is actively transmitted in Venezuela. Further detailed studies and implementation of appropriate control measures are therefore

The effects of temperature, scan interval and rate of oxygen (O2) decline on pulse frequency modulation (PFM)-based minimum fluorescence (Fα) and the Fα-based lower oxygen limit (LOL) were investigated using ‘Honeycrisp’ apples (Malus × domestica Borkh). The effects of temperature and hypoxic stress on pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) fluorescence parameters were also investigated. The PFM scan interval had no effect on the Fα baseline, but increases in the scan interval decreased the low-O2-induced fluorescence spike intensity (ΔFα). Temperature negatively correlated with the Fα baseline while ΔFα °C−1 was greater at lower than at higher temperatures. When using a PAM fluorometer, the minimum fluorescence (Fo), and to a lesser extent the maximum fluorescence (Fm), were similarly affected by temperature as was Fα. Temperature altered the LOL in fruit. Apples stored at 20, 10, 3.5 and 0 °C spiked at 0.72, 0.33, 0.22 and 0.08 kPa O2, respectively, under a rapid O2 decline (i.e., 20.9 to <1 kPa O2 in ≈5–6 h). Although the low-O2 Fα spike apex values did not change with temperature, the spike intensity increased with temperature due to a reduced fluorescence baseline. A slower O2 decline rate produced slightly higher LOL and lower spike intensity values. In conclusion, temperature and rate of O2 decline affected the low-O2-induced PFM fluorescence spike intensity as well as the LOL, while the PFM scan interval affected the spike intensity. 相似文献
